Incoming Calls….

“Cbeyond does not transmit voice across the Internet. All phone calls made using Cbeyond’s service are transmitted over our own secure, private, Cisco-powered network. From our customers’ locations we convert voice signals into “packets“, which are the basic building blocks of an Internet Protocol data network, and transport them across our network. When the voice packets arrive at our network egress, we convert them back into a traditional, TDM voice signal that is carried over the traditional Public Switched Telephone Network to its destination. This allows us to dynamically deliver both voice and data services to our customers over one integrated connection without compromising the quality of their voice service.” -http://www.cbeyond.net/cbeyond/news-company-faqs.htm

Interestingly,  everytime I call my house (which is VOIP or DID)  from another phone I recieve a zero length packet from 69.15.210.130  which an ARIN query resolves as a Cbeyond address.

I tested it a few times.  These are the results:

Using a network protocol analyzer,  I was monitoring incoming data to my PC.  Well, I noticed incoming registers whenever I wasn’t utilizing the connection.  I looked up the address on ARIN and researched the company a little to discover that it was part of a major backbone and tied in with VOIP or DID.  Out of sheer curiousity, I checked the phone to see when the latest call occured (the ringer is OFF).  To my surprise, there had been a call at almost that exact time !  (Around 12:00 PM, Jan 29, 2009)  I had to test it with a cell phone or two… heh.

The results were;  Out of 4 calls (Including the random first call), cell phone 1 and cell phone 2 showed up 2 times.  I think the reasons why, out of three calls made with the 2 cell phones, only 2 had shown results is simply because of:

A.) The timeframe of the 2 calls made with the same cell phone(1) was very close(The first call yielding the result of the Cbeyond address showing up).

-or-

B.) It simply was a back-to-back call made with the same phone.

The other cell phone call was made and the same IP address showed up again.

It seems to send these zero packets at the end of each call.

Anyway,  I hope some ‘patriot’ out there… somewhere….  finds this information helpful to their field of studies or work.

Thanks for reading this and may the Lord Jesus Christ bless you and your family!
